Question: How can I improve my Chinese subject and writing skills?
Answer:
Reading. Reading is the best way to improve both your language and writing skills.
It is essential to read lots of books. It is good for your to have a reading habit. It is never too late to start reading.
I often heard parents saying that: “My child had been reading since young, but why isn’t their writing skill improving yet?” If this statement is valid, I believe there’s only two possibility:
1, maybe he/she did not read the books carefully or that they’ve never read a good book.
I would suggest that you read the Chinese classical writings, such as “Journey to the West”, “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”, “Dream of the Red Chamber”. Please read the original edition of these books. The edited versions are usually shortened or modified so that they’ve lost originality of the story. These books could help a lot in your Chinese language.
Western classical writings are not to be missed as well. You may improve your English at the same time while you read stories or poems like the ones written by Shakespear.
2, you may have read many books, but I believe what you did was “scanned through” rather than reading.
It could be magnificent if you’re able to read 10 lines in a minute, but if the words you’ve read do not enter your mind, they’re just wasted. Sometimes, reading slowly could also grant you the opportunity to build fascinating sentences. If you glanced through your own writings quickly, you may not be able to notice any room for improvement. I’d usually ask my students to read word by word, let them appreciate and admire the usage of those beautiful words.
Since reading is an essential step to improve languages and writing skills, I trust that a reading habit comes with its value as well. Malaysia’s reading culture is relatively lower compared to other countries. Most youngsters show no interest in books. Perhaps they had not understood the true joy of reading. Thus, parents should construct a comfortable atmosphere and environment to read for the children. For example, you may set up a mini library at home or even just a few racks of books. When there are books in the house, the atmosphere changes. If parents themselves show no reading habit, it is pretty hard to nurture children with such habit as well.
Therefore, we must also remind ourselves of our responsibility as parents when our children’s weak at languages and writing skill.
