Smart Consumer

Question: Many of my friends have iPhone, iPad and other expensive gadgets. I wish I could have one too.

Answer:

Technology nowadays is a never ending advancement that has shortened the distance of the world. In other words, the world is at your hands now with all the cultural events, hot selling products and vast information in a handy device. This has greatly affected our society, especially the youngsters. Temptations are everywhere with advertisements on the television, the papers and the internet. Youngsters without the ability to earn a penny would change their mode of spending under such influence.

“Many of my friends have iPhone, iPad and other expensive gadgets. I wish I could have one too.” Such thinking is most likely to be the thoughts in most youngsters’ mind today. They think that having the newest gadgets could make them a famous person and that they well be a hot news among their friends. But come to think of it, do all those gadgets bring a necessity or benefit to your studies and relationship among friends? If you truly think that it helps, your parents would think of a way for it. But if it does not, then it will only be an extra burden for your parents on such excess spending. In the same time, you might even got addicted in playing the gadgets and neglected your studies.

How should you spend as a student? From here, we’ve provided a few aspect of considerations for your reference:

1, have a proper value judgment

At your age, you should begin exploring your interests and your talent, planning your following path of your studies. You should be fighting hard for your aims, creating your victorious achievement as you gain experience. It isn’t a time for you to become materialistic and enjoy yourself with the latest technology.

2, have a proper management on your spending

At your age, your pocket money would have come from your parents. This is just the same for your classmates. We must have a proper management when it comes to spending. Before buying an item, we must consider if we truly need such item. Is it affordable? Is it worth what it costs? Would we burden our parents? After such considerations, we are more aware of what we’re spending on and it would do us less trouble.

3, build up a confident and healthy heart

Interactions between friends does not necessarily be constructed upon the latest technology or branded items. Relationship is constructed on mutual care and encouragement. When you or your friends are facing problems on their studies or relationship, you must encourage each other to overcome the problem. Only this way could we achieve our friends’ trust.

To build up a good value judgment and management of spending, we must have dialogues with our parents, teachers, and also PICs from our Junior Division. We must share our opinion with them and exchange point of view. As JD PICs, we must also educate our children on their wants and needs, such that they do not be under the influence of advertisement nowadays. Be a smart consumer, know what you need and spend only when you need to.
