Public Speaking

Question: I’m pretty much an “indoor” person. Whenever I was asked to speak in public, I’d shiver and get tensed up. What should I do to overcome this? How do I make myself a good public speaker?

Answer:

Actually, most people will get nervous when they were asked to get up to a stage. However, if you do this more frequent, you’d gather more experience and soon be able to overcome your nerves.

But before you could go through all the training, how should you stop yourself from shivering? Actually, there’s a way I’d like to share with you here.

Firstly, you should prepare a proper script. Most of the speaker would stare at their script on the stage, too afraid to look at any audience.

But at this very moment, it is time for me to tell you the following steps: to memorize the script. Once you’ve got the script in your mind, you’re prepared to get on the stage. This way, you’ll only need to take a few glances on the script in your hand. In the same time, you could train yourself to smile and look at your audience.

If you hadn’t prepared a script for yourself, you might get too tensed to say anything on the stage with a blank mind. But if you prepared a script but never memorized it, you might be lost of words at times.

Now, you might want to ask: Why some of the adult speakers had no script but could speak so well? How could they do that? Is there a way to do that?

Some people are born with the talent to speak, and some learn from their experience. But most of the people trained themselves hard before they could fly with their words. If you ask me how to train yourself, here are some suggestions.

1, read more to enrich yourself with knowledge

To become a person with a quick mind for words, you must educate yourself with all sort of knowledge. When you have the knowledge, you will naturally be able to speak of things from different fields. Reading is the best way to enrich yourself with knowledge.

2, look for opportunities to train yourself on the stage

There are usually chances to speak on the stage in the school. Especially when teachers asked the students to announce something. Some teachers give chances to the students to report information in the assembly. This could be your golden opportunity to train yourself up. Other than that, you might want to try debating competition or public speaking contests.

At the beginning, you may still feel nervous and speak a little too soft. But make sure you try to overcome these problems over and over again. Prepare yourself with a few times of practice and get used to the script you wrote. When you sincerely prepared your script, your audience will feel your message deeply. Continuously share with people around you, and you will realize that it isn’t that scary to speak in public after all. All it takes is a true and sincere heart.
