Helping the family
Question: My family isn’t wealthy, I’d like to help out but unfortunately I’m still a student. What else can I do?

Answer:

Alvin used to be a joyful, carefree child until lately, he heard his parents’ conversation about the family’s problems.

On that particular day after school, he lied on the couch and watched Disney’s Lion King on the television channel again. The story talks about Simba, a playful little lion cub. One day, Simba’s evil uncle tricked him to somewhere dangerous. Worrying the safety of his child, Simba’s father came along to rescue him. Unfortunately, Simba was still a defenseless little cub. He had no choice but to watch his father died saving him. Sorrowful and hopeless, he ran away from home. At this very moment, Alvin was thinking himself like Simba, being unable to help out his family while he was still a student. He thought to himself “what else can I do?”.

As the world’s economy worsened nowadays, our lovely kids could not keep themselves away from feeling bad for their parents as they see them being worried. I believe you’d all wish to help out your parents. Well then, let’s think about a few ways to help our parents shall we?

Before we begin thinking of ways to help out our parents, we must first ensure that we’ve done our own part. As students, we have the responsibility to keep learning regardless of grades. If we failed to do so, we may not be able to do well in other things. Keep in mind that our parents work hard not just to make sure that we’re fed, but educated as well. Hence, we must sincerely learn in our everyday life to repay our parents. When we have done our parts, we can move on to some other things then.

1, Cut costs and save more: As students, you may not have any income to help your family out, but there is something else you could do. You could try cutting down the usage of your pocket money for snacks and soft drinks. Furthermore, you should start practicing a good habit such as switching off the lights when they’re not in use, never waste water. This way, you can help reduce the consumption in your family.

2, share the responsibility for housework: After a long day from work, your parents must be too exhausted to do the housework. This time, you could help them out by doing housework such as the chores, cleaning the floor, the rubbish and so on. If you can reduce the burden of your parents, that’ll be great. I’m sure they’ll feel happier.

3, chant Daimoku: Never forget that we have the greatest Mystic Law with us. Whenever we’re challenged, chant Daimoku so that wisdom and courage will come to you.

Do you remember the ending of Lion King? Simba grew up to be a courageous lion along with his friends to fight off evil. He saved his fellow friends and family. We must never be nervous, but remember to face each day full of sincerity. I believe you could someday be like Simba, to save your family and be the King of Happiness.
