Faith or Homework?
Question: In between my homework and faith, which is more important?

Answer:

Both of them are important, however, they’re of a different category. Faith is like the roots of a tree, whereas homework and study is the tree trunk. Other things and parts of your life will make up the shoots, leaves and flowers. Faith is what drives you ahead to study and learn more. To learn without faith is like a car without its engine. Therefore, let your faith be the roots at your heart and put your academic at the first place.

But what’s the purpose of learning? It is to nurture and cultivate capable person that will contribute to the society, bring happiness to people.

Why do we need religion? It is for our own sake, and for other people’s happiness. The motivation to contribute what we’ve learned to the society is religion.

Hence, being a professor or a lawyer does not make you a great person. All of this will only be determined according to actions you make that’ll contribute to the society. You’ll be a noble person only when you work for many people’s happiness. Therefore, if you’re very active on kosen-rufu, you are considered a noble person. All of your parents who’ve contributed in the Gakkai are more respectable than lots of famous person. They believe that they must let all the people they meet to be in happiness! They have fought with such determination. That is the origin of Soka Gakkai.

Perhaps your parents would often leave you at home alone. I believe that they’d wished to be home and spend time with you too. But perhaps they think that this is rather selfish, hence, they’ve decided to work hard for kosen-rufu. Those who are able of understanding their parents, are truly an adult.

President Ikeda once talked about his ambition, which is for everyone to excel themselves in their respective fields and industries. But if we work hard for fame and name, we’ll have no difference to the leaders we’ve once had. Therefore, we must become leaders that could exert themselves the fullest for the sake of the public. When leaders as such are contributing everywhere, it will mark the glorious time for kosen-rufu. Hence, for the sake of becoming a capable and remarkable leader, we must collect experience and build ourselves stronger.

To construct an ideal society, we need lots of people with “heart”. And “Faith” is the only way of training a heart. Only those who work hard in the Gakkai can train themselves. Let’s work hard together!
