Question: While I was taking the bus, I saw an elder standing in front of me. I wanted to give my seat to him, but I couldn’t find my courage to speak my mind. What should I do?
Answer:
A person’s courage could change his/her life. You could have a considerate thought and a noble dream, but they could be useless if you had no courage. We could never realize our dreams in reality if we couldn’t make the first move. This had no difference to careless or people who had no dreams. Hence, it is very crucial that we are brave enough. Courage is like a motivation force, an engine that runs our life correctly. Be it studies, extra-curricular activities or even doing your gongyo, all of these require courage as well.
A righteous thought must come with an action in order to make such thought a true act of courage and justice. People might say that we’re just a busybody when we give our seat to en elder, but that does not matter. This is because you’ve done something that you think is right, there is no doubt for that.
Speaking of courage, all the things we do required a certain amount of courage. However, such courage could never compete with the courage to study well, to smile to the ones you dislike, and not to snooze each morning. Making a change in our daily lives, moving towards the right way is the main point of such courage. A “courage to endure” may seem ordinary, but it could be the brightest courage of all.
Some of you may think that you do not possess a single courage, but that isn’t true. Everyone could attain Buddhahood despite who they are, this is the “Life of Buddha”. It is like an undying fire of passion and courage. Therefore, we all do have courage in us, but it’s just that we’ve never bring it out of us. That’s right, courage is something found within us. The Daishonin often encouraged his disciple to bring out the “heart of a lion king” within them. To bring out that courage, we need mutual encouragement from our good friends too.
Encouragement is very essential. For all you know, encouragement is a power that charges you and your friends with motivation. It is quite often that we may find our own courage as we encourage other people. Some of the people also find their true courage after they tried acting like a courageous person. When you have an Ichinen to become some one more courageous, you will be filled with energy from that very moment. Moreover, you will be fearless. Hence, we must have the habit and will to step forward even if we’re in a suffer or losing our direction. Courage is power. It makes you a stronger, tougher person. As you collect and keep all your little courage acts, you will, in the end turn out to be a brave person.
In a nutshell, it all falls on your hand. Whether to live in regret, thinking of how good it could be if only you had courage, or to live with satisfaction over the things you’ve done out of courage, it all depends on you. Be brave! Step forward, and your story will begin. I’m sure you can do it!
