Question: I know that my parents have been working hard to bring me up. Other than studies, what can I do in order to help them or repay them?
Answer:
In Malaysia, most families struggle to live a life unlike the minority of certain richer families. Parents are usually working hard in two major ways, to support the family financially and to educate their children in becoming capable person.
Hence, if you wish to be good and repay your parents, there are ways of doing it. You may not have the ability to earn money for now, but you could help save money and cut down expenses.
Firstly, you must cherish and use your writing tools well, never break them so you don’t have to spend extra money on them. If you use everything well, you actually helped to cut down extra spending.
Secondly, cut down your spending on items like video games, comic, and toys. Not only will they take up your study time, but they’ll sum up to a great amount of money in the end.
Thirdly, you must love yourselves more and stay healthy. Don’t get ill or hurt yourselves or you might not just spend more on medical fees, and you’ll make your parents worry about you. Imagine how our parents would feel, to take care of us after a long day at work. They would be exhausted don’t they? So please love yourselves well.
Other than that, tuition fees could also be another large expense for our parents. If your parents wanted you to go for tuition lessons, be considerate and be determined to learn well from those lessons. Never waste a bit of that tuition fees that they paid.
In addition, please do not spend your pocket money in other things. Your parents gave you pocket money for you to buy breakfast or lunch, so don’t skip your meals and spend the money on other things like toys. Skipping meals isn’t a healthy lifestyle.
Besides that, we can also help our parents to do some of the housework. Some countries have done a research that shows people who’ve done housework in their childhood happen to be more successful and happier when they grow up. But what’s important here is that we could lessen our parent’s burden. Since they are the great pillars of the family, we couldn’t bear to let them get ill isn’t it?
On the other hand, we must also remember not to make our parents angry. They had been facing a lot of things from their work, if they had to be mad even after their working hours, they’ll age very fast. If they age faster, they’ll leave us sooner someday, we won’t want that to happen don’t we?
Last but not least, we must understand our parents’ heart as they bring us up. In the school, make sure you give your best effort in achieving your grades; in Gakkai, make sure you be active in activities and meetings and be guided by our brothers and sisters. Be a capable person of kosen-rufu, it is the best way of repaying our parents.
I hope that everyone of you will be grateful and filial towards your parents. Nichiren Daishonin and Shakyamuni had been teaching the importance of being filial. At your age, what you could do is not to let your parents worry about you. If you could accomplish a few points mentioned above, then you’ll slowly become a child that doesn’t need to be worried of. Work hard!
