Captain of the day

Question: I’m aware that I need to study, but the internet and computer games just seem so irresistible. What should I do?

Answer:

I believe that the animation and sound effect from the computer could be more attractive than that book on your hand! Not just you, even babies would prefer having a toy with bright colours or lighting and sound. It is perfectly normal to behave that way.

At times, our parents and teachers may restrict us from playing computer games. We may feel restricted without freedom, but have you notice who’s the one to choose the way you live? That’s right, it’s you! Parents could never take the examination for us, nor can they eat for us. It’s your life and you’re the one to decide how you should live it.

Parents and teachers could be nagging a lot at times, but there is no doubt that they have more experience on the consequences to our decisions. Nevertheless, you’re still the master of your life. In order to live with freedom, you must first learn to deal with the consequences, be responsible!

Now that you’ve understood about the idea of decision and consequences, how should we keep ourselves away from temptations? I’ve got a suggestion here.

You should be your own “captain of the day”: there’s a story long ago about a person on the boat. This person happened to be someone who could easily get sick on the sea. However, when he’s the one to controls the boat, his illness just go away. When you’re the captain of the boat, you are responsible for the lives of your passengers on board. Likewise, when we feel hard to control ourselves, we’re probably treating ourselves as just the “passenger of the day” for that moment. When we’re in that position, it seems that the direction of the boat has got nothing to do with us.

It is easy to be just a passenger, but when temptations appeared, we could be easily affected by those “waves”. When we snapped out of it, it’ll be too late to realize that we’ve strayed too far from the boat. In the end, we would have to fight our way back to the main stream. If we could never make it back, we might end up having those nightmares. And on the next day, we’d probably be scolded by the teacher for not completing the homework.

Therefore, in order to keep ourselves away from such “energy-wasting” accidents, we must be smart to organize our day as the “captain of the day”! Once we determined our direction and aim, be active to reach out for that goal. When we focus on a goal on our way or challenges, we could hardly get lost from the track.

Set an everyday target: What’s your aim today? Once you’ve decided, you could start that ship. Everyone has a ship of mission that belongs only to themselves. However, it isn’t something that can be achieved in just a day. Hence, we must target to win in our everyday challenges, for example: it’s a great improvement when I achieved the goal of reading for an hour! But of course this doesn’t mean that we should stop playing games at all. It is just like a training for us to learn the way of managing our time and goal. When we achieved improvement day by day, we’re actually getting closer and closer to our victory! You may start with a goal of reading for an hour, and the next day with 2 hours, and the next day with 3 hours again. In the end, the outcome of your effort would turn out to be great!

Mr. Ikeda once said “Everyone’s intelligence is similar. Variance occurs in the part of ‘self victory’. Those who excelled and succeeded must have been giving the very best of them without us knowing.” Start your ship with a goal each day, and be courageous to strive forward reaching for that victory of yours!
