Question: I wished to focus on my studies, but in the same time, I wanted to join the Gakkai activities. It seems heavy when everything comes together at the same time. How can I manage both to be an outstanding person?
Answer:
Everyone has a dream, an ambition we wished to complete and realize for the sake of the value of life. Hence, we tend to cultivate and find our sincerity, courage, wisdom and mission on our journey. These are all the fundamental elements for victory. In my opinion, there’s a great energy of youth that open up our perception and activate our thoughts, it is an energy called “active learning”.
The ages of youth are the ages to learn. Those who do not learn will live like an aimless boat without guidance from the lighthouse. It is a life without hope and growth. In contrary, to learn is to gather energy, to learn to achieve victory that brings you the blue sky of happiness.
However, we should have set an aim ever since we’re in primary school so that we could grow towards the ambition step by step. What’s more important is to maintain a good performance in our academic and to listen carefully during a lesson. In the same time, we must have the courage to question when there are doubts. Do not leave your questions overnight or else you’ll soon lose the interest to feed your curiosity. Meanwhile, we could also get use of our holidays as we do revisions to remind us about the knowledge we’ve learned. If we have spare time, we’ll join the Gakkai activities then.
Some of you may think of using the rest of your spare time for your revision or homework. I do agree that it helps to reduce your burden in terms of academic, but there are advantages of joining the Gakkai activities too. This way, we can learn all sort of knowledge that isn’t taught in classes such as stories of the Buddhism, philosophy and a positive judgment of value. These are all the essence of the Soka Gakkai Education. After the activities, I’m sure that you’ll be able to re-confirm your aims and be determined to strive harder, showing the true value of yours. I have been doing this previously. To be able to join the activities, I’d arrange my time wisely so that I do not waste a single minute. I improved a lot in my academics because I had been striving continuously towards my aim. This had built me a confidence that has become a great energy that supports my further education.
Please do not forget that the stage of the 21st century belongs to you! Hence, you must train yourselves in becoming a great capable person. If you do not study or learn well, you may be looked down by others in the society. No matter how difficult it is, endure and give your best effort to learn. Buddhism values “time” as an opportunity. This goes the same with our life. At this very moment, we must train ourselves to construct the frame of our great spirit and the foundation of our life. Train yourself at this age when you’re still capable of it, spend your time absorbing knowledge and experience which will soon become the foundation of your life.
Mr. Ikeda once said that “Soka Gakkai’s education is here for the sake of the children’s happiness. In order to build a society of education, we must nurture people of happiness and of value.” The Gakkai is the place full of philosophies of life. We must learn from both the school and the Gakkai at this youthful stage in order to be able of contributing one thing or two to the society in the future.
