Reading a good book

Question: I knew that reading extracurricular books is important, but I don’t know which of them are beneficial.

Answer:

There are no fixed criteria to judge books we read. This is because everyone has a different interest and hobby.

What’s important is your will to read. When there’s a motive, it’s easier to read. For example, you might want to choose topics that you’re interested but was never good at. If you were interested about the world history, try it then.

On the other hand, there are also books about scientific knowledge that were specifically written for teens. Fictions could also be a good choice. Some of you may be interested in knowing different types of bugs. If so, try the books that talk about bugs.

These genres of books could easily be found in the school’s libraries. We could always take the initiative to choose one that we like.

If you started out that way, you’ll find the joy of reading. As you read, your curiosity and hunger for knowledge would increase as well. With this attitude, you could enlarge your perception and your knowledge.

What about books that might help in our academics? If you were thinking about the same question, maybe you should consider books that were recommended by your friends and teachers. Books that are recommended by teachers and other magazines are mostly recognized to have a value of it.

Other than that, I think that we should not just read books that provides us knowledge, but books that enlighten us about justice too.

For example, we could read about certain philosopher’s writings. We must practice to read more frequent as we’re still students. This is because we do not get as much of time to read when we started to work in the society.

Some of the noble philosophical writings study about the truth of humanity, which happen to be very astounding. The truth of humanity and perception of life are no topics that are solely for those who are interested in it.

If you’re a person that excels in science and mathematical subjects, you may aim to be a technician or something. However, there are also philosophical writings that activate our mind to think about things in life. It may not be directly applicable to your future profession, but it does affect the growth of your personality and character building.

Mr. Ikeda once said that “We must read a book with endurance from the very beginning till the end. We can only learn the way to act and think as we calm our hearts down to read.” Let reading be a part of our life! Make friends with the books. They will be able to enrich our life.
