The joy of reading
Question: Ever since the semester began, mom had been forcing me to read. Why must students read?

Answer:

As youngsters, we all enjoyed watching television programmes and comics. However, cartoons and comics might not activate our mind to imagine things as much as books do. This is because television programmes and comics would depict pictures and animation for us without the need for us to imagine an impossible scene. Whereas when we read and absorb each word, it stimulates our mind to think and imagine. This is why some of the people would feel tired as soon as they start reading.

There nothing more powerful than knowledge!” said by a Russian philosopher, Gorky. Books are like food to our soul, as important as the nutrients we need for our body to grow. Reading books could expose ourselves to all kinds of knowledge and have the joy of imagination which will then enriches our hearts.

Human must live as human, hence, imagination is something we can’t live without. Be it comics or cartoons, it all originated from our imagination. Therefore, without reading great books, we will not be able to have a great imagination to produce more fascinating works like comics and cartoons. Even computers were invented when human first thought of the need of using it. Reading on the other hand, is a skill that we must brush up everyday.

For example, to those who do not understand a single music note will treat them as meaningless little mark and notes. However, to the musicians, they’re an infinite imagination. This works the same when it comes to reading. If we hadn’t practice to read often, we could not experience the joy of reading. Be it sports or arts, when we do not practice our skills, we will not be able to enjoy the things we do.

If you have never experienced the joy of reading, then it’d be a great lost to you. Whether or not we could experience such joy, it will then affect our personality and attitude. Reading a good book will be as if we’re following a great teacher.

Reading is a “human right” which other animals could not do. Regardless of what terms to define a joy, it all comes after an effort was given. For example, it is impossible for us to experience the joy of skiing without practicing it. It’s the same when it comes to reading. We could only understand the joy of it when we endured and gave our effort in it.

Reading isn’t just solely an act to prepare yourself for examinations. It is not something we do for the sake of other people, but for the aim to enrich ourselves. Depending solely on our own experience is like living a life of a person, but through reading, we could see the way others live and see life. In the same time, we could even be in dialogue with noble philosophers who’ve passed away through their writings. Reading provides us knowledge and courage as well.

Some said that “The first 20 years is the longest part of the first half of our life.” At your current age, you should be absorbing all sorts of knowledge and experience as a foundation of your life. What you learn now could determine the path you take in the future. It determines how much you’re able to contribute. Please get yourself exposed to different genres of books when you’re young to train yourself with the hobby of reading. This is because such hobby would do us good for the rest of our lives.
