I hate myself for my temper

Question: I get mad easily these days. Sometimes I hate myself for being that way. What should I do?

Answer:

Life as a student nowadays could get troublesome at times. These signs point out how helpless we are in relation to ourselves, our surrounding and the changes of the society. However, this is something that everyone goes through as we grow.

This is just the same as we learn to ride on a bicycle. In the beginning, we’d feel unsure and felt troubled as we were challenged. Nevertheless, as we overcame our weakness and achieve the victory, it’ll seem to be not as difficult as it was anymore. In contrary, if we give up on our way, it’ll be our loss. People who give up easily will limit their own potential as their way of thinking becomes narrower.

Hence, it is important that we realize how easily we could get mad at things. This is because we get to understand more about ourselves. Despite not knowing the reason behind our temper, we could still learn to manage our emotion through games and activities. These are all part of our growth as a youthful teen.

Sometimes we will be troubled by our own personality. Actually there could be all sort of personality in us. It isn’t easy to change one’s character. Anyhow, I think that we must all be true to ourselves and never deny ourselves. Everyone’s got good and bad points, but we must learn to improve ourselves rather than thinking ourselves as a useless person.

The second president of SGI, Mr. Toda once shaka-buku a mad-tempered person.
He said to that man “Do not mind too much about your character. When you chant for your whole life, the bad personality will disappear in time. We must know our aims and contribute our whole life to the society.” After that, that man became a friendly person who was welcomed by all the people. Ever since then, his life has been full of values.

SGI President Ikeda once mentioned “The happiness of our life is not determined by our personality, but the way we live and the content of it. To enrich our life, we need the philosophy and education of the Buddhism. If we continue chanting for our life, it will then be purified and everything will move towards the positive direction.”

Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism is a Buddhism of Ichinen Sansen, it is a Buddhism of human revolution, a Buddhism of a strong Ichinen and life force. This will allow us to grow towards the positive as growth and development. What’s important is what kind of person you wish to be. I hope that everyone can be determined to march towards your aim courageously for your ambition so that you leave a glittering youth behind as you grow.
