Question: There are all kinds of people in this world, but why is there a difference between good guys and bad guys?
Answer:
Regarding to this question, philosophers have always been describing it in a different angle. One of the most influential ideas was the one that explains about people’s origin as a good entity. It further explains that mankind’s negative side only emerges through many reasons and influence of the surrounding. However, there is always a very solid character in us that is quite hard to change. Hence, there are also ideas explaining that there should be rules and regulations to govern the negative side of people. Nevertheless, the ‘Good Human Nature’ idea possesses high moral energy!
It is an existing fact that, as you mentioned, there are good guys and bad guys in the society. However, these people may not be good or bad from the very beginning. There will be a few negative characters in a good person as well. On the other hand, how many of us would actually know that a criminal could be benevolence when he/she thinks about their children? An English author, Robert Louis Stevenson written a novel named ‘Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde’ that talks about a person who was behaving calm and gentle during the day and turning evil during the night. Actually in my opinion, there are always good and bad in us.
In other words, there’s a part of our heart that has the will to compete and threaten the others; but on the other hand, there’s a part of us that wishes to help when we see people being in need. We aren’t forced for this mentality, but such thoughts would emerge accordingly to the situation we face.
Now, if there’s good and evil in us, why is there a differentiation between good and bad guys? There is no doubt that the influence of a person’s surroundings and their education background could come in manipulation.
For example, those who’ve gone through hardship in their life will understand how it feels for the rest of the people to be in the similar situation. At this point, people shoe their benevolence and began to help each other out. In contrary, those who lived a luxurious life could not comprehend the people’s struggle and hence they would probably turn out to be an arrogant person.
Other than that, there could also be a variation between two that grow up from the same background. One may learn from his situation, and the other could fail to break through. Such variation further leads us to the variation of their personality. However, the changes on their emotion, in this case, would not be blamed on the situation but to be judged their own will to fight through.
But of course, this does not mean that everyone has to be a good person all the time. If we never understand about these two energies inside of us, we might turn out to be a person that pretends to be good without knowing it. We might turn out to have dual personality like Dr. Jekyll.
What’s important is that we face ourselves truthfully, to find out our good points. Be true to yourself, never pretend to be anyone else in the public and shoe the very truthful side of yours. We do not escape the evil side of us, but we overcome and control it. From here, we collect experience and the evil side of us will begin to shrink as the good side of us shines brightly. Through learning and training, we must turn our bad qualities good and unleash the positive energy of us.
Nevertheless, we may have different opinions when it comes to the judgment of what’s a good person like. On an overall view, being a gentle and well-behaved person is good enough. However, I’d like to add that the highest rank of good person should be one that thinks for the people’s happiness, one that loves peace of the society and of the world. In the same time, that must be a person that values life. If we could never be strong enough to overcome challenges in life, then it would mean nothing for us to be a gentle and well-behaved person. In my opinion, it’s alright not to have a perfect personality, because what makes us a good person is our courage that drives us forward upon completing our ambition, the very passion that pushes us towards our aim!
