The Aim of Life

Question: Why must we have an aim in life?

Answer:

Long ago, there was a young lady who questioned the great Napoléon “What is the greatest happiness in life?” He answered “I think, it is to be able to exert the very best of our talent and what we’re able of!”

When we have a clear aim in life, we could then exert the very best of us and enrich our life with joy. In contrary, if we live a meaningless life, everything we do would seem to have no fun.

From what I heard, in a choir lesson, there are students who wished to accomplish their ambition of being a star. But there are also people who, with the permission and support from their families, joined the class purely because of their interest in singing. However, it is funny that these few students could not seem to make it to be a great star. They tend to give up in halfway. On the other hand, those who carry great ambitions but had no support from their families would fight through the challenge and give their best to achieve their ambitions.

From the above example, we know that those who carry a clear aim and strong will could succeed in anything they do. Those who live life with no life force would probably be the ones who had no ambition, no aim, and people that had never tasted failure, those who do not persevere.

There was a scholar who once mentioned that “We always have to compete with ‘death’. Hence, we must live our life with greater values. We must never give up while we challenge towards our aims. We might fall once in a while, but if we quit, we lose. If we could just bring up the courage in us, wisdom and energy will come along. Hence, when we’re challenging the hardship in life, we are actually collecting experience that enriches our life. That’s where the meaning and value of life comes from.”

What’s important while creating values in life? It’s ‘courage’! It’s the courage to fight against hardship, the courage to stand on what’s right. If we want happiness, we must live with courage! We can never achieve happiness if we live cowardly as we could never achieve victory in life. Cowards could not create values.

It goes the same with belief. Once we’re determined of our aim, we must march forward courageously, and we must chant towards Gohonzon with a strong faith. When we overcome the hardship and challenge in life, our life will glow with a strong life force and wisdom. A noble challenge begins with a tough challenge here.

Mr. Ikeda mentioned in his guidance “The Daishonin written in his ‘Happiness in this world’ that ‘Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo no matter what happens.’ ” In this piece of gosho, we learn that a life without suffer is like a plain white paper, where there is no happiness when there is no suffer. In conclusion, we must exert our true colours as we challenge in the reality. We must stand strong with every breath we take as the joy and satisfaction that emerges from the very bottom of our life will be the true happiness we look for.

Hence, there is a need of aim as we live. Other than giving the best of us, we must also chant sincerely towards Gohonzon. When we achieve the ripening fruits of the victory, we will be able to feel the meaning and value of life.
