One day, there were two fishing experts who decided to pay a visit to the beach. With the help of their equipment, catching fishes was never a problem to them. Coincidentally, there were a group of tourists on the beach, spectating their splendid skills. Without a second thought, they bought themselves brand new fishing rods to try out their luck. Unfortunately, they couldn’t even catch a thing.
Now the fishing experts may have similar skills in fishing but they personality is totally different. One of them behaved like a social outcast who enjoyed to be alone, undisturbed. But the other one was rather friendly. “Hey guys, having a hard time over there? I’ll teach you how to fish. If you managed to catch any fish after that, just give one out of ten to me as a repay. How’s it?”
The group of tourists discussed and giggled for a moment, and they shook hands with the fishing expert upon agreeing on the deal.
As soon as he’s done with teaching them, he went over to another group of people. He proposed the same deal to them. Soon, he received tonnes of fishes from the groups of tourists. In addition, he made friends and they’ve all been calling him the ‘professor’ as he was well respected.
Meanwhile, the first fishing expert sat there all day fishing with himself. A boring day ended as he counted his result of the day. However, he had no friends to laugh with all day long. In the end, the number of his fishes was far behind his partner over there.
Postscript:
Dear comrades, do you think you’re the lonely fisherman or the friendly one?
These two are good examples of the ones who ‘strive hard for the mission of kosen-rufu’ and the ones who think that ‘my own happiness is enough’. As we’ve learned, the Soka Gakkai and Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism brings us absolute happiness. However, is it really enough to achieve just our own happiness?
The friendly fishing expert was willing to share his knowledge to the people, just like our mission, to spread the Buddhism to all the people. As the group of tourists gained, the fisherman gets his reward as well. When someone achieved happiness in life just because we’ve spread Daishonin’s Buddhism to them, we’ll be able to find ours too.
Nevertheless, we must first become great ‘fishermen’ before helping others. In other words, we must first be happy and joyful in order to share our joy with people around us. If we think that we’re always troubled and living in sorrow, people would it hard to trust us. Soka Gakkai upholds the teaching of Humanism whereby everyone could attain Buddhahood, and everyone could achieve absolute happiness.
Ikeda Sensei had been realizing his mentor, Toda Sensei’s dreams and mission on the journey of kosen-rufu. He had been travelling across the world for each of our happiness. Ikeda Sensei’s been encouraging every one of us from his dialogues, guidance, and writings. As his disciples, have we ever given our effort for the sake of others’ happiness like our mentor?
JD PICs have the same mission, to pass on such spirit to achieve happiness courageously to our juniors. It is difficult for Sensei to travel every country to meet every single one of us. But I could recall Sensei saying “Those who are truly living in happiness are the ones who bring happiness to others.” As his disciples, we must have a heart of gratitude to strive along Sensei for the sake of people’s happiness! Hence, we must bring such spirit into the JD meet so that they’ll turn out to be successful ones!
Let’s achieve happiness together and march courageously on the journey of kosen-rufu!
