The heart of a child
There was a single lady who moved to the neighbourhood recently. She just found out that there was a poor family next door, a widow with two kids. One night, the electricity went out and the whole area was plunged into darkness. The lady quickly lit up a candle. Soon, there was a knock on her door. When she opened up, the kids from next door were standing right in front of her. The kids quickly asked “Hi there, do you have any candle?”
The lady thought for a while “What? They don’t even have any candles? I better not share mine with them or they’ll be depending on me for everything...” And so, she yelled “No!”
When she was about to shut the door, the kids smiled and said “We knew you wouldn’t have any!” Then, they took out two candles from their pockets and said “Here you go. Mommy said you’re staying here alone and she’s afraid that you might not have any candles with you, so she asked us to bring you these.” After hearing that, the lady began to blame herself for being too cold. Being touched, she hugged the kids with her eyes full of tears.
A True Heart
Long ago, there was a town which had been suffering from a drought. Without any rain at all, the crops were dying. The priest of the town gathered everyone in the church to prepare for a ritual. Among the people in the church, there was a little girl, so petite that no one could spot her in the crowd of adults. Out of a sudden, the priest spotted the girl holding something. He was so touched that he said on the stage “That little girl touched my heart!” Everyone’s attention was brought towards the girl while the priest pointed at her. Then he said “We’re all here to pray for rain, but she’s the only one who brought umbrella.” There it was, lying beside the little girl.
Everyone remained calm for a moment, and burst into tears and applause for the girl.
Postscript:
I think it’s not wrong to say that “These little fellas aren’t that ‘little’ after all. They’re ‘big’ instead! Their kind and pure heart I mean! So do their faith!” Every kid is the citizen of the world with their hearts all linked together. But what’s a ‘citizen of the world’? It’s
‘people of wisdom’ that truly recognize the interrelationship of life; it’s
‘people of courage’ that would respect and understand one another despite the difference of our character, race, and culture rather than being afraid and denying it; it’s
‘people of benevolence’ that could understand the pain and suffering of the people and uniting them disregarding the distance between them. When we’re taught of the perception of value in our childhood, it will continue to grow with us. Thus, we must provide an
‘education of peace’, because this is where we find the importance of
‘education of human rights’. For example, when we are able of providing our passion and care towards the children in the JD meetings or home visits, it’ll slowly become their foundation of peace.
In the stories, we were informed that the lady was a selfish person that does not trust anyone. However, she was affected by the children’s caring and loving hearts. Their benevolence and wisdom is the very power of their life. Hence, we must never say “They’re just kids”, as this pushes us further away from understanding them. Not only that we could lose the chance of knowing them, but it also insults their valuable potential. Let’s see our children as ‘a person’ that needs to be respected!
