I could still remember that year when I was still a standard 3 student. One day after school, I saw a beautiful sunset as the golden sunlight washes the valleys.
“I must be quicker than the sun. I must reach home before the sun disappears.” I thought to myself.
I began to run as quick as I could. As I reached the main gate of the house, the sun was about to give its final glow.
I did not open the door immediately. I stood there and looked at the sun, it made me feel deeply touched. When I got into the house and greeted mother in the kitchen, I told her about my victory on the race with the sun.
I spend my childhood racing with the sun, trying to get home before dawn. It has always been a pleasure to see the sunset among the valleys. I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty in life since then. To me, if I don’t run faster than time does, then I wouldn’t have chance to enjoy more of these beautiful sceneries in life.
However, it’s sorrowful that we never seem to be able to win over time. Time engulfed us pretty often.
When we’re trying to achieve great goals in life, it’s pretty much the same as racing with the sun. Sometimes we’ll get to see the sun smiling as we won, yet it’ll sink down the hills as time passes.
If we’re looking at the sunset with a sorrowful heart, the sun would still fall.
Since there are things out of our control, why don’t we live with our attention focusing on every little change in life, to live happily without regrets?
By the age of 40, we might not be able to say something as glorious as ‘I won over the sun.’
But when I wake up every morning, I’d greet myself in the mirror saying “Hi! Let’s create something for our life today!”
I’d face the cruel time with a smile, cherishing every special moment as it comes.
I rather smile and be my own partner, than to befriend with a troublesome me.
I must continuously race with the sun! I know as I walked through all the paths of challenge, I could see the light.

Postscript:
We could never stop the time from moving.
Everyone would have wanted to pause the moment of sunset, staying at the most beautiful picture of the day. Knowing that it’s impossible, we’d still think about these beautiful moments in life every now and then.
Once, there was a Soka University student standing at the main gate yelling “Wow! I’ve had lots of memories here! How memorable.”
Coincidentally, Ikeda Sensei passed by at the moment. He heard the student and told him “If we keep on staying in the past, we might not be able to keep walking forward. By then, we might not advance. But if you could take these memories as a kind of encouragement and motivation, they’d become even more meaningful.”
Everything is changing with time. Nothing could be forced to follow our routine and stop when we wanted it to. Just because our environment is continuously changing, we have to try our best getting used to it. In the same time, never forgetting to exert the best of us on our respective fields.
Let’s create more and more memorable experience that marks our advancement instead of staying at the same spot, thinking about the past. The author would greet himself in the mirror every morning. Perhaps it could be a good way to start our day either.
No matter how drastic an environment changes after a sunset, the sun will rise again the next day. Hence, we must consistently mark our goals and resolution, be determined to achieve them.
One of Sensei’s prayer includes “to march towards a noble tomorrow despite the failures in the past”.
Other than that, Ikeda Sensei said “As long as there is life, we must keep moving forward! As long as life persists, we must create new values!”
Let’s hold a strong determination and have a long term race with the sun. Please strive to the fullest for your future!
