Long long time ago, human beings had no shoes to wear. They were all walking bare foot.
One day, the King went to a village far far away from his castle for a trip. On his journey, he passed by roads and paths that are filled with uneven rocks. They hurt his legs so much. When he went back to his castle after the trip, he ordered that every road in the kingdom shall be covered with leather. This way, not only him will be safe, but his citizens as well. No one had to worry about the pain when they walk.
However, the plan wasn’t a very successful one. His people killed all the cows and gather the leather for the roads, but it was never enough! Plus, all the labour and work requires a great supply of gold. The people began to think that this might not work, but because it was an order from the kind, everyone obeyed.
Out of all the citizens, there was a clever one. He met the King in the castle and told him “My King! Why should we sacrifice all the cows and using such great amount of labour? Why must we spend so much on the road? Why not we just wrap our foot with leather?” The King was astonished and enlightened by his words. Immediately, he ordered everyone to change the plan. This is the story of the Origin of Leather Shoes.
Postscript:
Why not changing ourselves at first, rather than hoping to change the world? This story informed us that we could always have a different perception and way of doing things. When we’re able to change ourselves, things we see in the world will begin to change as well.
When a heart changes, attitude changes; when attitude changes, habits change; when habit changes, our lives will change. Just as Gosho teaches “The heart is what matters most”, ichinen could determine everything.
