Live Pearls

There’s a night market in Hawaii that sells live pearls.

There were lots of shells in the bucket. A shell costs about 7 USD and people are allowed to pick the ones they favoured.

As the customers picked their shells, the hawker would open it and get the pearl out for them. It’s like a lottery. You’re in luck if you could get bigger pearls.

According to the hawker, these shells were bred in the sea at the same time. But no one knows why some of their pearls would appear bigger and some might not be in a perfect spherical shape.

I left as soon as the hawker’s done explaining. Thinking back on what he said, it reminded me of our life.

In life, we go through all sorts of challenges and hardship. However, some people could still produce a charming pearl out of their life.

We have to be like the shells. Turning hardship and challenges into chances to produce charming pearls.

Hardship is like a live pearl. When we could have more acceptances, they could glow charmingly. But if we couldn’t cope with it, it could be a threat.

Postscript:

Pearls are valuable. They are a kind of ancient gems. There’s a pearl sac in oysters and mussels that keeps on wrapping up sand and stone. As the stone and sand is coated with multiple layers, they form pearls.

In every shell, there’s got to be a pearl with a different appearance. But it isn’t easy producing pearls. As we look back into our life, to be admired and appreciated by the people, to glow with charm in our life, we had to go through hardship and challenges. But if we couldn’t face challenges and overcome hardship, we’ll always be the ones to admire other ‘pearls’ around us and never be a ‘pearl’ ourselves.

Pearl is a sign of health, happiness, and wealth. Before opening a shell, we’re always full of expectation and curiosity. It feels the same towards people. When we’re curious of someone’s character or when we’re expecting something out of a person, we may want to know more about them. Same as the shells, we’d somehow be ‘opened’ by people around us as well. To gain trust and appreciation from people, we must train ourselves in life so that our life would glow brilliantly.

Ikeda Sensei once said “A noble personality is able of opening up people’s heart, touching souls.” It’s very direct when it comes to a heart to heart communication. People around us could feel it when we have a strong heart that’s able of facing all sorts of challenges. We could never pretend. It’s the same as pearls. When we scratch them with sharp objects, the strong and great ones would never show a single crack. However, the fake pearls could easily be damaged even with a scratch from the nail. They’ll show their true form when it breaks.

Hence, it is important for leaders to train their personality. There could be some untruthful leaders in the society that couldn’t gain trust from their followers.

But as JD PICs who lead for the future of our children, we must take action to train ourselves hard as everyone is hoping for a bright and colourful future. Ikeda Sensei is a great example. With his truthful personality, Sensei realized the teachings of his mentor. Currently, Sensei had been awarded a total of 310 honorary doctorate awards. This is an achievement through numerous challenges and training. Each of the award possesses the story of our Sensei who had been working really hard for the sake of our happiness.

Perhaps we may feel that we couldn’t have gained such great achievement like Sensei. Ikeda Sensei had been sacrificing all his time to challenge for our happiness. If everyone of us could excel and shine brilliantly in our respective fields as his disciples, I believe that the world will be full of hope. Till then, we will be able to add more colours to our Sensei’s achievement. Until this very moment, Ikeda Sensei had been grateful towards his mentor. He’d always share the outcome of his effort to his mentor.

Let’s return to our faith, action, and learning, to strive hard with our Sensei for the Junior Division, for the sake of Kosen Rufu!
