The art of listening
A popular TV host, Richard Linklater once interviewed a kid, when he asked “What do you wish to become when you grow up?”
The innocent kid answered “I want to be a pilot!”
Then he continued “What if the engine of your plane ran out of fuel while you were flying above the Pacific Ocean? What would you do?” The kid replied “I’d inform the passengers to sit tight with their safety belts on. Then, I’d fly out with a parachute.”
Everyone was laughing when they heard that. However, Linklater wished to understand more of this child and see whether he’s bluffing. Out of everyone’s expectation, the kid cried out loud. He realized that the kid’s been very emotional.
Linklater proceeded with his question “Why would you do that?”
The kid’s answer showed everyone a pure and innocent thought of a child
“I have to go get fuel, I’ll be back!”
A pure happiness
There was a girl who’d walk to school everyday. On one particular day, the weather wasn’t that good. Clouds were getting darker, and the wind was blowing stronger. Soon, even the thunder began striking. It finally rained.
The little girl’s mother was so worried of her daughter. As the thunderstorm got worse, lightning began to pierce through the clouds like a lethal sword. The worried mother quickly got into her car and drove along the road in search of her daughter. When she’s found her, the little girl was on her way to the school. But whenever the lightning strikes, she’d stop, lift her head up and smile.
The mother yelled at her daughter “Baby, what are you doing?”
The little girl replied “God was snapping a photo of me just now, so I must smile!”
Postscript:
“I have to go get fuel, I’ll be back!” this sentence touched me. No one would ever think that such a young child who aspires to be a pilot could be such noble to
think for the life of every passenger. This child’s thought carries wisdom, courage, and hope. He’d even imagine the situation so vivid that it made him cried. If the question was for us to answer, I don’t think many of us would think of it the same way. This is what we should learn from the child.
As for the little girl, what a joyful and pretty heart she has. She’s see things in a better way rather than being negative. She never feared the lightning but embraced it with a smile. Such pure energy is amazing! A smile could defeat everything!
That’s right, this shows how true the children could be!
Children’s thought could always surprise us. They’re very pure and innocent, always thinking on the bright side. Their words, action and spirit could always show what they think. As the ones who are responsible on nurturing our children, we must learn to attentively observe their every single action. Children never knew how to hide their thoughts yet. Hence, if we could just pay more attention to them, I bet well understand what they’re thinking. When our children are ready to express themselves,
we must be like Linklater, to listen, observe, then understand their intention. We must not behave like the public that laughed at the kid and think that he was selfish! Children often say what they’re thinking. They’d not think too much but they focus well on a situation, which is why they’re often truthful. Ikeda Sensei once said “
Children’s hearts are very sensitive.” Hence, we must be truthful to our children as well. When we could train ourselves to be a good role model, we’d be the best way to educate our children. Remember, to listen is to understand the most truthful thought of our children!
Let’s walk into the hearts of our children and discover the potential they possess!
