Size of Brain = Intelligence?

I’ve always heard the adults saying that people with larger head/brain are smarter. Could it be?

Do you know that apes’ intelligence is top on the list of animals in the animal kingdom? However, the weight of their brains is far behind human beings. On the other hand, we’d lose to whales and elephants when it comes to the weight of the brains. But none of them have a greater intelligence compared to mankind.

A former Russian scientist came up with a standard to determine the development of a brain. The higher the level, the greater the brain is developed. Through researches, it is proven that human beings are far beyond all the animals in this. In other words, the size of our head/brain does not necessarily determine our intelligence.

In fact, our brain works better when there are more brain cells connecting and functioning. In other words, a smaller brain must not necessarily be having lesser brain cells. This works vice versa to large brains. Plus, a person’s intelligence and knowledge is very much depending on his/her action to learn.

Hence, in order to be intelligent, we must continuously learn new things. At times, we might be laughed or criticize for being dumb and stupid. Nevertheless, we should not be withdrawn from what others have said. On the other hand, we should give more effort in the learning progress to be a capable person.

As Ikeda Sensei once said “Life is about taking action, challenging, and advancing.” So never give up on the journey of learning.

Postscript:

It is very often that people enjoy making fun of another by saying that they’re dumb. Chinese have a saying that says ‘Having a large head but without a brain, having a large brain but to store grasses’. Words like these are discriminating one’s capability. We must never comment in this way as we wouldn’t like to be commented so as well.

If u had been hurt by words like this, never give up to learn and obtain knowledge disregarding of our age. However, we must be reminded that knowledge without wisdom is useless. Knowledge is like a sword. If we use it right, it is a sword of justice. Whereas if we misuse it without wisdom, it could be the sword of evilness. Hence, we must follow the teaching of Nichiren Daishonin and the guidance of our mentor.

As Ikeda Sensei mentioned ‘Bad books could bring up the evil in us like a poison. On the other hand, good books lead us to a life of happiness, enabling us to create value’. Hence, we must possess the wisdom to differentiate which knowledge to be learned so that brings good value. Let’s train ourselves to be capable person with both knowledge and wisdom!
