It’s a few days after Halloween. There is a murder case in the village of Dempsey, where a stranger was found dead on the snow. The frightened Chief of the village quickly called the detective.
A blizzard had blocked all the roads to the village. Without other choices, Yuri came alone with his assistant on a helicopter. But before they land, Yuri asked to fly around the village for two rounds. “Do you still have the mood to go for a sight-seeing?” asked the Chief impatiently.
Yuri: “I haven’t notice any footsteps around the village. I suppose the murderer is still in the village! There you go, half of the case solved.”
The chief was amazed after hearing this.
After investigating the crime scene, Yuri came to the chief’s office and asked for the name list of the villagers. Then, he asked the chief to bring 18 villagers whom he selected from the list to meet up in the school.
10 minutes later, they’ve all gathered in a classroom. Yuri then asked the principal to distribute papers and pencils to the villagers and said towards the villagers “I’ve investigated the crime scene. And the conclusion is, the murderer must be among all of you!”
Everyone was astonished by this daring statement.
Yuri: “Not to be worried. I will not get the wrong person, and I’ll not let the murderer go so easily. Now, I’d like you to write a phrase for me. By linking the phrase and the proof I’ve got from the scene, we’ll know who’s the person behind this.”
“What should we write?” asked by an impatient man.
Yuri paused for a moment, “A beautiful cat, and a tasty cake.”
The villagers burst into laughter, but their laughter stopped when Yuri said “You won’t be laughing soon.”
Yuri walked behind the villagers as they began writing. At this very moment, he stopped in front of a man and asked “Excuse me mister, what’s your name?”
The frightened villager replied “I’m…. I’m mark.”
Yuri: “Great, you can go home now. But Mark must stay.”
Mark: “Why? I didn’t kill anyone!”
Yuri began to stare into Mark’s eyes and said “Please repeat what you’ve just said!”
“I’ve… I’ve never killed anyone!” replied Mark with a softer tone.
“Once more!” yelled Yuri.
“I… I’ve… murdered him!” replied Mark.
In the end, Yuri explained that he’s determined the average age of the murderer by the struggling mark left by the victim. From the blood stain, he realized that the murderer is a person with 6 fingers on his right hand. Mark was identified easily from this test when they were asked to write something.
Postscript:
Everyone would face all kinds of challenges. “There isn’t a sea without wave, and there isn’t a piece of land without being hit by the rain”. This means that wherever we are, we’d face problems and challenges. However, we must not think that problems are here to defeat us and to make our life more suffering. On the other hand, they’re here to let us improve ourselves, to be a better person.
Hall Caine, a famous English writer shared his experience, saying that he’s grew stronger through persisting on challenges. Only the ones who fought courageously in the worst situation would obtain the highest glory and victory.
However, when problems are really falling on us, would we ever gather the greatest courage and wisdom we have to challenge through? Have you ever doubted your effort in solving matters but bringing more troubles? But here, Ikeda Sensei gave us a guidance that says “Today’s task is to challenge. Tomorrow’s task is to obtain victory!” When there are problems annoying us, never be afraid and back down from it. Be reminded that we still have Gohonzon by our side. Tell your problems to Gohonzon, challenge them without strong faith and Daimoku. I believe we could challenge through the problems when we have strong Ichinen in believing on achieving victory.
Heading back to the story, the detective seemed to have extraordinary ability to solve the case in no time. Perhaps, it is his sensitive observation that helped him became such a great detective. Nevertheless, we hardly think of the effort he’s given behind the victory we’ve seen. Nobody’s born to excel in anything. We could only be great when we challenge on our weakness and overcome them. Knowing the true value of our lives will help us be the true victors. Yuri would sure to have been paying a lot of effort to reach the current state. But of course, we do not train ourselves to be expert just that we can show off, but to contribute to the society. Just as Yuri, serving the public truthfully with his expertise. However, serving the public requires great amount of courage, but he made it. This is the same for 3 of our presidents, spending their lives for world peace and kosen-rufu. We must inherit such great spirit from our mentor! To ensure the river of kosen-rufu would flow infinitely. Only then, our lives would shine with great sparkles.
In conclusion, strengthen our faith! Prolong with an undoubting faith! This is the foundation of a lifetime’s victory.
