Long ago, there’s an unlucky rabbit named Forte. Forte used to have a friend to lives with it, however, the friend left him and joined the rest of the rabbits. There was a garden where Forte used to dine at, but it is now fenced up by the owner. What more devastating, he lost one of its ears while he got bitten by a fox. He nearly became the fox’s dinner. Being left devastation, despair, there’s nothing much left to do, but to stop all the sorrow, hunger, and suffering. There is only one way that came to his mind, to commit suicide. However, a new problem troubled Forte. How should Forte kill himself?
Forte began to think, there are so many ways for human beings to die, but why isn’t there a single way for rabbit? Come to think of it, why hasn’t there been any news about a rabbit or any other animals that killed themselves? It seems that only human beings know how to commit suicide. Forte found that there is not a single suicide case in the animal kingdom’s history that it could take as a reference. “Why not I be the first to set an example for my fellow rabbits?” thought Forte.
Hence, Forte spent its everyday thinking about the ways to commit suicide. One day, he found a simple way, which is to stop breathing. No living thing can live without oxygen. Nevertheless, no matter how many times he tried to hold its breath, he failed to do so. In the end, he’d gasp for air after a few moments. From this, he concluded that holding one’s breath couldn’t kill. After that, Forte told the rest of the rabbits about this. The news spread like wildfire in the forest. This theory was even supported by an old but knowledgeable goat. Soon, Forte became a famous scientist.
Next, Forte thought of poisoning himself with some wild berries. Hence, he went into the woods, collected tonnes of wild berries. Then, he crushed and mixed the berries together and consumed them at once. Soon, he passed out and fainted on the ground. But when Forte gained conscious again, he found out that he’s still alive. On the other hand, the berries made him felt better on his health. Hence, from this, he concluded that the berries carry medical properties and told the rest of the rabbits about this. In just a moment, Forte’s theory was again, proven by his fellow rabbits. The mixture of berries cured most of the sickness. Once again, Forte became a famous inventor among them.
Still looking for some ways to kill himself in one way or another, Forte finally came up with a brand new idea. He decided to close his eyes and keep walking forward, with his luck, he would have crash into something or get crashed by something. Hence, he tried that out and walked for quite some time. Until he got thirsty, he decided to stop by for a drink since he’s still alive. Surprisingly, when he opened his eyes, he couldn’t see any disaster, but a big green field that seemed to be a great place to be. He was jumping up and down, yelling happily to see such a beautiful scenery. Forte quickly trace back his journey to get home and inform the rest of the rabbits. As he brought them to a new world, everyone was praising him for his great work. For now, he’d became a noble explorer.
Forte is now very much admired and respected by his fellow rabbits. They’ve all decided to give an award to the noble rabbit. On the awarding ceremony, an elder rabbit, Hark asked for Forte’s recipe to his success, however, Forte could only react shyly and replied with a low volume “It’s because I’ve wanted to commit suicide…” The elder rabbit knew that Forte’s reputation shall not be broken, hence, he stopped asking. After the ceremony, Hark personally asked Forte if he still think that he should kill himself. Forte replied confidently “Not anymore. There is no reason for me to kill myself now. I’ve got new friends, new partner. I don’t have to worry about the food either. I should strive even harder to become a true scientist, inventor, and explorer in the future!”
Hark smiled and nodded his head “You’re a lucky one. Suicide may be the most stupid thing to do, but fortunately you’ve found more ways to live from it. Moreover, you’ve obtained something from this.”
Forte scratched his head with a puzzled expression “What is it?”
Hark: “Wisdom.”
Postscript:
Everyone would have had their own problems troubling them. It is usual that we would feel like running away when troubles came up to us. But come to think of it, those people with happiness, do they live without a single problem?
It is ordinary to face various problems in life. No matter if it’s big or small, we’d still have to solve these questions in life. We must have the undefeatable spirit and train ourselves to attain a character as solid as a diamond through these challenges. This, is what we call happiness.
Those who keep looking forward would often see new opportunities. This story talks about a rabbit who was determined to die, but in the end, giving convenience and contribution to his fellow rabbits. Well of course we do not do the same to think of dying, but on the other hand, we should be having a spirit and courage to defeat the fear towards death! Until then, we’re able to march forward vigorously. Once we’ve determined to take action, we’ll obtain wisdom, and we’ll start to see things clearer. Remember, we do not only walk when there is an existing path, but we must create new paths too!
Ikeda Sensei once said “When we’re taking actions in life, we’ll always have a vigorous spirit.” Whenever or wherever we may be, we must remember to have the spirit of a lion, standing in the front line. When everyone began to strive for their aim like a strong and confident lion, our heart of bravery and justice will be linked together.
When we’ve lost the aim to strive forward, we must not stop walking forward. When we’re lost, do remember that we’ve got great seniors and mentors ahead of us. Follow them, learn from them, and someday we’ll be able to set out towards our new aim. We should not let them down. Let’s pay our gratitude to them with our growth!
Be undefeatable! Even if we’ve lost, never be afraid to stand up once again, and keep on striving forward.
