Forbearance
We must possess such spirit that ‘no matter how difficult my situation is, I can definitely overcome it!’ and ‘I must break through my narrow mindedness!’ With such spirit, one’s life will inevitably expand further. One who confronts adversity in their youths and persevered and one who suffered many times more hardships and others will live richer and abundant lives as compared to others.
-    Mr. Ikeda

Do you feel that your life is so tiring or do you feel that work is very arduous, do you feel that life is very boring? Actually, as long as we learn ‘forbearance’ or tolerance, all hardships can be eliminated. In life, everyone faces matters where one should endure or shouldn’t endure; say for example unpredictable incidents or situations which happened all so sudden. Just as how Mr. Ikeda said: ‘One who confronts adversity in their youths and persevered or one who suffered many times more hardships than others will live richer and more abundant lives as compared to others.’

Learning forbearance and courageously persevere is the essential requirements everyone could set up in society. Whenever you confront setbacks, you must persevere through it; when you are happy, you must tolerate; when you are defeated, you have to forbear it and when you succeeded, you must withstand yourself…

Everyone must be able to tolerate various matters which arises because only then, we won’t lose track of ourselves in diversity and we won’t lose sight of ourselves in favourable circumstances.

Learning forbearance is a very significant aspect for a student, some students who failed in their test would feel that their performance will always be poorer than other students and then eventually lose their confidence. For this reason, they must learn forbearance and tolerance by accepting their mistakes and avoid committing the same mistakes again and do better next time. On the contrary, if one failed for the first attempt and doesn’t have the courage try again; that person are just caught in their temporary happiness; fearing setbacks. People who broke down amidst adversity and unable to recover from setbacks will regret. Those who abandon themselves in times of despair are equivalent to giving up their life. Those remains dauntless in defeat are victors. Successes always come after failure. Hence, we mustn’t lose faith in our life. This way, we could be like how Mr. Ikeda said, becoming one who could incessantly further expands our life.

But even if we succeeded, we mustn’t be overwhelmed by victory. If we are complacent at the victory of that moment and forgot the hardships of the past, then that is only a show of extravagance in which ultimately failure awaits us. Therefore, whenever we achieve good grades, we must learn to tolerate and accept our achievements as well as other people’s admiration, this way we remain humble regardless of victory or defeat.  Some students who are physically disabled may fall into the abyss of misery where they had to deal with despair every day. It is during those times, we must learn to tolerate and forbearance because that’s the only way which won’t make us feeling inferior.  Mr. Ikeda said: ‘If contemplation results in people losing self esteem and confidence, then that is degeneration and not progress.’

How much burden can ones life bear? No one could tell. But learning to tolerate and forbearance, one’s life will be able to hold up the sky.

Learning forbearance means learning how to face everything that happens in life. We will inevitably confront challenges in our life so we must learn to tolerate and courageously face it. Du Toit is South African’s very talented swimmer. In 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, being just 16 years old at that time, she was qualified in three Olympic qualifying finals. But in February 2001, Du Toit lost her left leg in a car accident. Three months after the amputation, Du Toit once again got back into the water because she never gave up her ideals.

Du Toit’s effort soon reap achievements, in 2002 Commonwealth games, Du Toit not only attain two gold medals in individual freestyle for people with disabilities, she also broke into the 800 meters free style swimming competition for able bodied swimmers. That same year, she beat Thorpe and was elected as the best swimmer for the event. In 2004, Du Toit attended the Athens Paralympic Games and won 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal.

When Du Toit was 6 years old, she had always looked forward to be able to join the Olympics and even though she lost a leg, she never gave up and keeps striving. In Open Water Swimming Championship in Japan this year, Du Toit obtained fourth place in 10 km marathon swimming and managed to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games Women’s 10km marathon swimming event.

Despite finishing off at 16th place, Du Toit didn’t feel sorry for herself at all, she said: ‘For me, I just wanted to join the competition because like normal people, I have dreams.’ After the competition Du Toit said: ‘This is the first Olympic Women’s 10km marathon swimming competition and I am very happy to be able to compete with the rest. I have never brood over the fact that I’ve lost one leg.’ At the upcoming Beijing Paralympic Games, Du Toit will participate in the competition and will be the queen on the battlefield. Speaking of her future plans, Du Toit laughed and said: ‘Next goal will be attending Britain’s Olympic Games!’ The journalists believed that she could achieve her goals from the firm determination she expressed.

We must learn to confront everything which comes our way and ultimately we will achieve victory.

I hope that you will live a life in which you will be able to accept and courageously confront adversities and is willing to share sufferings of friends, contributing for others and society. Do wreck your brains thinking about it! Your life condition will also be expanded.
