Regardless of victory or defeat, we must boldly confront our challenges
Despite encountering whatever situation, we must uphold the spirit of ‘Regardless of victory or defeat, we must boldly confront our challenges!’
——Ikeda Sensei
Please do not misunderstand the word to challenge means to go to war, here it means to strive and confront our problems and difficulties in our life until we succeed. Have you ever heard of the story of ‘The tortoise and the hare?’ who is the victor? That’s correct, it’s the tortoise. The hare is supposed to win the race but why is it in the end the tortoise won? The key is in confronting our struggles courageously.
Although the tortoise has short feet and crawls very slowly he never regards it as his weakness which stops him from pressing on. But instead, he accepted the hare’s invitation to race. At the beginning, most of you would probably assume that the hare will definitely win the race but victory or defeat is not determined from the start but at the end. With the strength of will and perseverance, the tortoise moves towards his goal one step at a time compromising his problems carefully refusing even the slightest carelessness. Finally, he won the race.
Human life is complicated, never smooth sailing even in society, the key is to never be defeated by one’s surrounding. How can we possibly wish everything to appear as we wish in this lifelong journey of ours? Therefore, we must challenge and overcome our problems and not be influenced by it causing us to be cowardly and afraid to face up to our problems and carry on progressing.
Whenever we encounter any problems, the most important thing is that we must possess the courageous spirit of ‘Boldly confronting our challenges regardless of victory or defeat’. When we have the courage of ‘Boldly confronting our challenges regardless of victory or defeat’, we can definitely solve any problems and overcome our difficulties. A person who challenges himself and succeeds is a victor.
Therefore, never because of ‘not being able to cope with studies’, ‘detached relationship with family members’ or even ‘not having a bosom friend’ makes you to give up challenging your problems. By doing so, you will leave an irrevocable regret later in your life. The spirit of challenging will bring out a ‘challenger’ in you. No matter what the outcome may be all challenges can bring out the fulfilling sense of ‘enrichment’. It also determines your future.
