As for youth what do you reckon is the most important thing in life?
As for youth, the most important and indispensable spirit is the sense of ‘righteousness’ that even though you encounter attacks from people around you, I hope that all of you will be someone who holds a firm conviction in the truth and persevere until the end no matter what. ——Mr. Ikeda

Britain’s famous fourth Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone (1808-1898), is well respected for his character and knowledge. When he was in high school, a riot happened in school; it arises because one of the students hated a teacher and further incites other students to protest. But William alone firmly opposed them resulting in them directing their anger towards him, criticizing him by saying that he should follow the majority’s viewpoint, violence even happened. But no matter what, he still stands firm on his beliefs; unyielding and eventually the protests ended.

William Ewart’s attitude is not appropriate under all circumstances though it is undeniable that most of the time minority gives in to majority, but we have also heard about resolves made without prudent thinking in situations which results submission towards violence.

Mr. Ikeda said: ‘I feel that it is truly miserable. I hope that all of you here who carries a huge responsibility for the future will be someone who holds fast to the truth and a person of who stands firm to ones beliefs, such person is truly noble.

Furthermore, courage is also very important. Both courage and righteousness are the two faces of a coin, which means that no matter how upright you are, if you don’t have courage, you won’t be able to accomplish something righteous. Based on William Edward’s example, he managed to stop the protests from happening because he mustered up his courage. If at that time, he feels that his standalone spirit is powerless, he won’t be able to have the determination to resolutely protest courageously.

On the contrary, someone without the sense of righteousness or courage can only be considered as ‘boorish type of courage’. As of those students who wanted to initiate protests, they do possess the courage but the nature courage of their courage is the unethical type of courage. What we just mentioned earlier about the spirit of righteousness and courage are similar to the sense of responsibility. A person with a very strong sense of responsibility will establish the spirit of righteousness and bring forth courage!
