26. The Grey Sun

1. This is a drawing from a Standard 3 student. This is the kind of student with high input and low achievement. His teacher commented "He's a very bright and active kid, but his learning progress isn't that well. Writing and counting multiplication seemed to be his problem even though he had understood and remembered it well." His emotion goes up and down drastically. If he's upset, he won't be staying that way for more than ten to fifteen minutes. The changes of his emotion is so sudden and temporary, which is one of the symptom of Integration Dysfunction.

2. When the kids were asked to share about their drawings, the author asked him what are the colour chunks. Unfortunately, he couldn't differentiate orange, yellow, blue, red, and black colour well. The other children by his age should have known the colours very well. The author thought that he was a colour blind. But still, he could differentiate green, yellow and red. He said "if the colours are separated, I could clearly identify them. But when they're mixed up in a piece of paper, I can't see clearly." Children who are having difficulties when they were developing usually face problems on learning, controlling their reactions, and speaking too. This is Integration Dysfunction, which is a common disorder among the children. 90% of them are boys, in other words, 5 to 20 boys out of 100 have this kind of disorder.

3. He told the author "I don't like sunrise! I can't fall asleep every night! I could only fall asleep when the sun rises, but it is the time mom wake me up too! I didn't get any sleep! That's why I don't like sunrise. When the author asked him what's the colour of the sun in his drawing, he shook his head and answered "I don't know, I can't identify it." Then, the author asked him to take out the colour pencil that he'd used to colour the sun, and he took out grey colour. He couldn't differentiate colour well, it makes the author thinks that his nervous system might not be sending the correct signal from what he perceived to his hands. It is recommended that parents could take their children for intelligence test and also evaluation on different aspects like reading, writing, counting, pronouncing, and speaking.

4. Just like this case, the children are always active and bright. However, it is not only their bright and active side that we've seen that could make us conclude that he/she is growing up healthily. Other than their academic affairs, we should also be aware if they're getting sufficient rest. Just as what this kid has said, he doesn't like it when the sun rises, as he only get to fall asleep at the time he was suppose to wake up. When we wake our children up, are we aware that they have got enough rest? Or are they just snoozing? It's never an easy task to bring up the children. We must always be attentive of every single action by our children, to understand them, and when we found some problem, we must then overcome it quickly.
