21. The Fence in The Book

1. This is drawn by a girl of Standard 4. Orange colour represents her father, but the message of it wasn't clear enough; blue represents mother, the way it was coloured made us think of curiosity. Whereas the existence of the yellowish-green colour might be signifying that she's getting the strength to control some of her bad experience or memory. But even if she's getting better from such an experience, it should have been coloured a little smoother.

2. The people underneath have big arms which doesn't fit with the body size. This means that there's still a lot that she wanted to do. The blue sky doesn't seemed bright enough. Her drawing is expressing her uncertainty and sorrow. She said that the fence in the drawing is the main door of her house. There are lots of troublesome problems outside the house that have kept her unhappy!

3. The teacher has been calling to her house to have a dialogue, but it's her father that picked up the call all the time. Other than that, the father showed an impatient and unwelcoming attitude as the teacher calls. By the way she never talked much about her father in the school, we know that their relationship has got to be improved. The teacher tried to get the mother on the phone, but the father told the teacher that there was no such person.

4. Without knowing the condition of her family, the teacher has been like a father and mother to her in the school and went through tough times with her. There are often people like the teacher around us, to care without asking for a single repay and without complaint. Their selfless effort often wakes up the "giant" that was asleep in the children's heart. After a semester, the teacher happily shared her experience to the author. She said "One night, the father was drunk. He called and woke the teacher from her dreams. Being patiently, the teacher was there to listen to the father until the next day. It is then she found out what the problem is.

5. The child's mother ran away after having a fight with the father. Since then, all the responsibility in the house falls on to the child. The father knew that she has been a good daughter and that he felt heartbroken to see her like that. However, whenever he thought about the mother running away from him, he'd uncontrolably release his temper on the child. He knows that it's not right, but he just can't control it. Then the teacher asked the father to look for her whenever he feels like being unable to control his temper and also asked him not to release his temper on the child anymore. The teacher asked him to curageously and sincerely ask his wife to come home. Astonishingly, the teacher went with him as he asked her to. She told the wife all about the husband's effort on changing his bad attitude and that he's been a good father.

6. At the end, the mother was touched by her husband's action, and the child got her warm and happy family back. Unlike before, she'd help her mother out with the housework after she got home from the school. It was because of the housework that has made her so tired and yawning in the class. And it was her yawns that has attracted the teacher's attention. Look around us, if there's someone that would contribute selflessly like the teacher, we should learn from him/her. And if there's none, let us be the first one to do it, even if we're not teachers, shouldn't we care for the children as much as the teachers do? From a small action like "yawning", we discover that small actions aren't so small after all. They tell us big stories. Stories that require our attention.
