13. Matchstick Men

1. This is drawn by a Standard 3 student.

2. Generally, kids draw human like a shape of tadpole, having two straight lines as hands and feet, and a huge head that only has eyes and mouth when they were at the age of 4. As for this drawing, the presence of “matchstick men” shows that the child’s intelligence could be around the age of 5 to 6. This is because the children’s attention will grow with their age. Usually, primary school students should have been drawing more details such as nose, ears, clothing, etc.

3. At first, they thought that he was drawing human under some unwilling condition, which made him produce this “simple” human. According to his standard 1 and 2 teachers, he was always drawing human in that way, as simple as that. They didn’t notice any problem, but they were aware of his learning process. He seemed to be catching up a little slower than the other students. They didn’t think about the possible problem he could be having, as they thought that he was just shy.

4. Physically, this child was very healthy. Just like the other kids, he could play with people, talk well, and had no problem with his sense of sight and hearing. Hence, most of the people didn’t think of giving him any special aid. This is what they call “recessive disorder”.

5. He was having 3 years of “slow” student life, until his parents and teachers notice his problem. After running some tests, they found out that he was a “moderately retarded” child. Since then, he was switched to a special class which could provide him a special education.
