The King's Heir
Have you heard this story before?

There was a wise and beloved King who ruled the country well. The people in the country lived in harmony and enjoy good livings. Nevertheless, he was getting old and did not have a successor to his throne. Therefore, he decided to pick a child from the lay people as his godson. When the news broke out, many people came forward to offer themselves as his godson. The King gave everyone a bag of seeds. The child who can produce the most beautiful flowers will be chosen as the King’s successor.

The children took the seeds home and carefully nurtured the flowers. Day and night, they removed grass, loosen the soil, watered the plants, and fertilize it. Everyone was hopeful to be the lucky one. There was a boy who did the same thing as the others. But unfortunately, his seeds did not even germinate, needless to say there was any blooming flowers. The boy went after his elders for further advice, he exhausted all means to nurture the seeds but to no avail.

On the day of assessment, the children lined up on the street each holding a pot full of blooming flowers. As The King went through the flowers, the children looked at the King with anticipations. The King did not get impressed by the flowers regardless of how beautiful and gracefully they are.
In such spontaneous, the King saw an empty vase and a boy with his eyes full of tears. The King then questioned the boy about his plight. And he replied “No matter how hard I tried, the seeds just won’t bud”. The boy even claimed that it might be a punishment from his past sin for plucking someone else’s flowers. The King eventually expressed his joy and smiled. Then he hugged the boy and said “You’re the one I’ve been looking for!”

Everyone did not understand why the King had said so. He then explained “The seeds that I’ve given were all cooked and fried. So, it is impossible for the seeds to germinate. I am looking for someone who is upfront, truthful and honest to be my apprentice. What flowers would a person with integrity produce?”. The children with blooming flowers started looking down to the floor as they knew that they’ve replaced the original seeds.

I believe that the story would sound familiar to you. The virtue picture behind the story is pretty simple, we, human ought to be upfront with everything, do not deceived by intelligence. Sometimes, being “too” clever will eventually lead to an unprecedented result. Well, the story hasn’t end yet.

Soon enough, the boy grew up to be the new King, a King like his father. Like what was expected, he was welcomed and loved by his people as he gained their trust from his truthful heart. After some years, the King got married had 3 children. 10 years gone by, and his children were 15, 13, and 10 years old. Now, the same scenario came to the King. He was thinking about who to be his heir after him. The King then figured out an idea. As soon as winter arrives, he called up his sons and gave them a seed each. He then told them that whoever could produce the most beautiful flowers will be his new apprentice.

You guys would have thought that the King is using the same old trick again. At least his sons thought so from the beginning. But after some examination, they found out that those seeds don’t seem to be cooked nor fried. So how is the King going to testify them?

The eldest Prince came up with an idea to be the first one to have the seeds germinated and bloomed.

While the elder brothers were figuring the methods to grow the seeds, the youngest Prince embraced the seed with plain joy.

The eldest Prince went to the storeroom and searched for the best hoe for his planting;
Then the second Prince went to the backyard of the dynasty and took the most beautiful flower pot;
The youngest Prince delicately put the seed into a little pouch and hooked on his chest.

The eldest Prince planted the seed into the snow land;
The second Prince went to the library and looked up for some books on the information about plants;
As for the youngest Prince, all he did was going to the worker’s restroom and had fun with the children there.

After a few days, the eldest Prince’s seed did not grow. He then unleashed his temper and anger by breaking the hoe.

On the other hand, the second Prince was trying to stay calm and think. He thought that he could grow the best flowers with these virtues. He then brought the pot into his room and placed it in the warmest corner of his room. He delicately took care of the flowers with the most premium fertilizers and soils he could obtain.

While the youngest Prince was still having fun with the children, the seed was still intensively kept on his chest.

The second Prince’s seed was starting to germinate as time gone by. He treated the plant as his treasure. He thought that he could protect the flowers by covering it with a golden cover. Unfortunately, the flowers died of lacking of oxygen and sunlight. He was very upset from the incident.

While the winter is coming to an end, spring arrives with blossoms of flowers. At the dawn, the youngest Prince went to the lake and jogged as usual. He then threw the seed into the lake, and in such significant the seed grew up as expected. He was so delighted of it. In a summer’s morning, the plants eventually bloom under the warm sunlight. He then brought the King, the Queen and his brothers to witness the blooming lilies.

The King was glad and happy. In fact, he was so happy that he composed a poem as the vivid scenery of the blooming lilies shines in front of him. Then he told his sons, ”Although my elder sons couldn’t accomplish the task, at least they did not lie to me. They were just getting the wrong timing. Different seeds require different ways, different seasons and weather. You would have to figure out the traits of seeds from the very beginning, for instance, by contemplating the suitable weather for lilies. Occasionally, we should promote patient in doing something, acting emotionally and rushing tends to make us lost. The only way is to be grateful and calm in process of an observation on something. Then The King asked his youngest Prince “I heard that you went playing with the children once you have got the seed, did you?”

“It is because the children there are very fond of planting. Therefore, I joined them in different tasks in order to get through the details in plantations. As you said, we should abide with the law of the nature as how it rules” answered the youngest Prince.

“Great, obviously we have the best choice for my heir here. That is true! We should leverage the rule as the way we treat our people well. You did well son, haha!” said the King.

The King and his family had a joyful dawn beside the lake. Is the story coming to an end here? Well, we’ll contemplate on how the next King will look for his predecessor.
