I always get the chance to be in contact with lots of children since I’m a JD PIC. Other than seeing them on the JD meeting, we will also home-visit them. One day, I went to home-visit a girl named Britney. I noticed several problems when we started talking about school life.
Me: Are you happy at school? Do you have a favourite subject?
Britney: I love going to school. I feel so happy to have lots of friends. I love science. I could gain a lot of knowledge in science class. Our teacher was teaching us about light bulbs lately.
Me: Good, then you can develop in this field.
Britney: Impossible. I think I’m stupid and I know nothing.
Me: Why do you think so?
Britney: My parents said so. They said that I’m a “busybody” because I always ask lots of questions.
Me: It’s good to ask. You get your answers when you asked for it.
Britney: But my family members won’t care about me when I ask them questions.
Me: Then you could ask your teachers, tuition teachers or even friends. You’re also welcomed to ask me, and if I don’t know the answers I will search it for you.
Britney: Really? (Quickly grabbed the science textbook) Why some batteries are big and why are some small? Why do bigger devices use bigger batteries? Why are some light bulbs dimmer or brighter because of batteries? Why and how do batteries work? What’s in the batteries?
Me: Batteries have different sizes because of the different quantity of energy content. For example, I’ll be full with just a plate of rice, and maybe some other people will only be full with 3 plates of rice. So this is the same for batteries. Understand? Other than using petrol, a car uses batteries too. Usually your mom would fetch you to school and maybe she will head to some other places after that. Being required to go so many places, and using lots of energy, a car needs a bigger battery. Different devices require different amount of energy, and so there’s different sizes of batteries. The light bulbs get dimmer when the energy is running low. It’s just like you when you get tired. You just don’t seem to have the energy to do anything, and want to rest and gain back your energy. This goes the same for batteries. The energy in the batteries will be finished someday, and so we need to recharge it or buy another new one. The batteries could work because of the chemical reaction in it. Just like our body, we have liver, heart, stomach, blood capillaries and so on. We could breathe and live because the organs in our body co-operate with each other. There’s chemical in the battery, and there’s also positive and negative polar, thus a battery can operates and provide electrical energy.
Britney: What’s positive and negative polar?
Me: Positive and negative polar is just like our parents. Our family is in good state because we have our father and mother. Battery has positive and negative polar which send and receive energy to provide an energy flow.
Our dialogue ended very soon. After I reached home, I kept thinking about what we’ve said just now. Luckily I could manage to answer her questions. What if they were harder? I felt that I don’t still have enough knowledge in other field and that I don’t know how to explain them in a creative way. Hence, I’ve decided to enrich myself with knowledge. This is not only our responsible but the family members’ too. It’s not that the children have lost their curiosity in this 21st century, but it’s us that have terminated them with unreasonable excuses. Do you think that their questions are silly? Do you think that they’re childish? Or do you think that they’ve thought too much? But haven’t we thought of ourselves who used to be a child too? What about those people who kept on investigating and satisfying their curiosity, and ended up inventing great inventions? Children are great person in the future, so their questions are not at all silly, but it’s us that haven’t been answering their questions. Our mentor never stopped reading all the time. As disciples, as JD PICs, we should read even more! We could only enhance and enlarge our vision by doing so. Hence, we could answer our children’s question and making them interested in learning.
